No big surprises with the announcement of the Australasian Performing Rights Association awards in Sydney at another cocaine and champagne knees up. The snore fest featured covers of winning songs by other artists who all seemed to dutifully offer faithful renditions of the originals.

Eskimo Joe unfathomably picked up several awards (Tone Deaf would like to hear from anyone who actually likes them) while the only interesting part of the night was a duet between Ted Albert Award winner Jimmy Little and The Church of Australia’s alternative national anthem Under The Milky Way.

Predictably Ash Grunwald won the blues and roots gong, Troy Cassar-Daley the country doorstop, and Hilltop Hoods the Skip-Hop category – like they seem to do every other year. Acca Dacca scored most played work for Rock n’ Roll Train while Angus and Malcolm Young picked up the song writing award and Empire of The Sun accepted their awards for ‘breakthrough artist’ of the year and dance work of the year with some typically loopy taped acceptance speeches from Luke Steele.

Kudos to the Temper Trap boys for winning song of the year with Sweet Disposition – they’ve come a long way from Thursday nights at 161.
