Sydney’s alt-rock five piece DRAW are about to release their brand new EP titled Wave Rider Blues. Hailing from within heart of Sydney, the DRAW formed in 2013, beginning as a simple nod to Australia’s much-loved Lotto Jackpot Mega Draw, the guys quickly realised that their chances of winning the lotto were slim, and turned to music whilst waiting for their Mega Draw dreams to come to life.

In celebration of the impressive release, the band’s vocalist Michael Rappell gave us a track by track run down of the EP. Check it out below.

Wave Rider Blues

“After reading the Pulitzer Prize awarded book ‘The Denial of Death’ by Ernest Becker, my perception of human nature changed. I started to see the struggle between our cultural ideals of love, freedom, morality etc and the reality of our temporary existence more vividly. This is what I infused into the lyrics of this song – that all the things in the world that promise ‘immortality’ help us to not fear the end. Whether this is good or bad just depends which side you are on.”

Sweet Mary

“Lyrically, this song stems from a character I am very fond of from a song Johnny Cash covered, ‘If I Give My Soul’. It is a story of the humility and forgiveness he is seeking to bring back the sense of wholeness he lost after his life of drinking and rock’n’roll has torn his family apart. Sonically, it has that folky rock vibe which we love about the early 70s.”

Ish

“To say that I admire Kurt Cobain’s music would be an understatement. Watching the bootleg of Nirvana’s last concert was, for me, bittersweet and made me wonder what he would have written after that. So this draws from some parallel universe where he is still alive making music. It is something I imagine he would have followed up In Utero with.”

I’ll Save You

“This is our tribute to Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Watching them perform at the Big Day Out 2011, they played with such raw power (pun intended) and listening to them made me think that they are the link between Nirvana and the Doors – the blues sound but heavy and with the urgency I felt from grunge. It is a tale of Henry Francis from AMC’s Mad Men stealing Betty from Don Draper and the saviour/superhero mentality he had in his seduction of her.”
