Melbourne Music Week is unquestionably our favourite time of the year, there’s a crazy amount of cool things happening throughout the streets, incredible tunes in the best venues, delicious food, great film and of course, the hand-crafted performance spaces especially designed for the event. 

With so much happening, we pieced together a list of gigs that you can’t afford to miss. We understand that some of these shows cost, so that’s why we decided to assemble a list of the best free things you can do throughout this wondrous celebration of music and art. 

Boogie Down In Melbourne’s Best Laneway Party

Where? Between Section 8 and Ferdydurke, Tattersalls Lane, Melbourne
When? Thursday, 20th November, 4:00pm – 1:00am
Why? If there’s one thing we love in Melbourne, it’s a Laneway party with live music, hell, that’s why this our fair nation now has the national travelling Laneway Festival. The city’s favourite hotspot Tattersalls lane will be transformed this Thursday night into a whirlwind of audio and visual delight. With an incredible array of performing artists including: Brawther, Chiefs, City Calm Down, Document Swell, Haarlo, Milwaukee Banks, Paces, RaRa, Scatter Scatter SoundSystem, Skomes and Stax Osset, this is one event that we still can’t believe is absolutely free

Discover The History Of Melbourne’s Underground Post-Punk Scene

Where? Signal, Northbank, Flinders Walk, Melbourne
When? Saturday, 22nd November, 6:00pm – 11:00pm
Why? Curated by a panel of the city’s music legends including, Stuart Grant of Primitive Calculators,Jimi Kritzler, the author of Noise In My Head: Voices From The Ugly Australian Underground and Kate Reid, founder of the independent record label It Records, these three will take you on a journey through Melbourne’s underground music scene. The trio will explore shared experiences, inspiration and the challenges associated with being a part of such a spirited, close-knit community, providing a unique insight into a whole world unknown to so many. After the discussion, there will be live performances by Bum Creek, Superstar, White Hex/Slug Guts, Witch Hats/Melbourne Cans, Batrider, Whitehorse, Pets With Pets, School of Radiant Living, Batpiss and more. This has got to be one of the raddest events of the entire Melbourne Music Week program.

Watch Swedish Teen Punk Film, We Are The Best! 

Where? Rooftop Cinema, 7/252 Swanston St, Melbourne
When? Wednesday, 19th November, 8:00pm-11:00pm
Why? Want to see one of the most heart-warming films of 2014? Look no further. This beautiful story explores the lives of three Swedish adolescent girls and their battle of “fitting in” as they discover the wild and liberating world of punk rock. Set in 1982, the trio of weirdos Bobo, Klara and Hedvig find salvation as they start their own band and fight against the grain of the standard strain of normality. Directed by Lukas Moodysson, the film charmed hearts of both viewers and critics around the globe.

Start Your Day With Live Music

Where? Queen Victoria Market, Corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St, Melbourne
When? Thursday 20th November, Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd, 10:30am – 11:30am
Why? Some say the best thing in the morning is to go for a run, others choose yoga, but we and MMW know the real secret: live music. Thursday’s show will witness the city’s adored electro RnB soul outfit The Harpoons, Friday sees the dreamlike shoegazers Lowtide whilst Hierophants with their post-punk tunes will take over the North Melbourne performing space. There’s never been a finer reason to be late to work, or even take the whole day off.

Dance ‘Til Dawn At Boney

Why? Who cares if this party has been moved from a laneway to indoors, no noise complaints will stop this insane event. Boney is famed for hosting some of the best dance parties of Melbourne in the last 12 months, and this Thursday will be no exception. The killer line-up will see Dylan Michél, Kane Ikin, Coup D’etat and Nic Hamilton (visuals) take over the topfloor bandroom whilst Julien Love, Silentjay and Versaj will perform downstairs.

 Experience A Gig In A Haunted Attic, If You Dare

Why? One of the best things about Melbourne Music Week is the unique performing spaces they hand-pick for artists, and the following is perfect. Housed in an abandoned old shirt factory in the city’s CBD, Kira Puru & the Bruise invite you for one hell of a live music adventure. The spooky surroundings suit the doom and gloom pop aesthetic of the band, creating a once in a life time typed show that is not to be missed.
