A recent study taken in Australia by data collection group Helix Persona has revealed that Aussies in fact attend more live music gigs than they do sporting events, but only just.

This news arrives courtesy of Roy Morgan, who have broken down the interesting statistics, proving that we are first and foremost avid live music seekers over sport.

The results show from the sample of 16,809 participants show that 12% of Australians 14-years old and over (approx. 2.4 million) attend at least one live music concert within an average three month interval, only marginally edging out those attending sporting events within that same time frame, which presently sits at 11%.

To reach these results, Helix Persona divided Australians into seven segments based on shared attitudes, behaviours and demographics. The name of subsection of the population are Metrotech, who are young, trendy higher-earners, who comprised of 21% of concert goers. Following them were Leading Lifestyles (15%), Today’s Families (11%), Getting By (10%), Golden Years (9%) and Battlers (8%).

Additional tidbits of interest from the surveyed results showed that rock and pop gigs were 2.5 times more popular than blues, jazz and classical overall. However, breaking down the segments revealed that 40% of Metrotechs, the strongest live music attendees preferred jazz, blues or classical, whilst Today’s Families were fives times more inclined to check out a rock or pop gig.

Before we go completely bonkers in stating that Australian’s only love live music, it must be noted that sporting events are of course very different and seasonal too, with AFL and NRL as winter sports, the Spring Racing Carnival of the warmer months not to mention massive one-off events like Formula 1 Racing and the Australian Open, it’s a little harder for sports-fans to attend events consistently in a three month period.

It’s great to see Australia’s passion for live music is not dwindling. If you’re interested there’s a full comprehensive breakdown of these statistics at Roy Morgan
