Daniel Johns pleaded guilty to mid-range drink-driving as he fronted Magistrate David Day in Newcastle Local Court today. The Silverchair frontman was caught behind the wheel with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his body late last month.

As The Daily Telegraph reports, police records indicate Johns was driving his black Jaguar along Morgan St in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether on 28th October when he was pulled over by police officers for a random breath test.

“In the opinion of police the accused was moderately affected by intoxicating liquor when he was stopped by police,” tendered court documents read. “His eyes were watery, bloodshot and he smelt heavily of intoxicating liquor.”

The 35-year-old rocker was arrested and taken to Newcastle police station, where he blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.123, two-and-a-half times the legal limit. Police immediately suspended his driver’s licence.

Johns reportedly told officers that he had consumed four “large” glasses of white wine in the hours leading up to his arrest. According to court documents obtained by The Age, police clocked Johns travelling between 70km/h and 80km/h in a 50km/h zone.

Johns has been ordered to undertake the Traffic Offenders Program. According to the Telegraph, Johns offered a brief apology for his actions outside of the Newcastle court before being driven away in a waiting car. He will reappear in court next February for sentencing.

Having placed Silverchair into “indefinite hibernation” in 2011, Johns has kept busy collaborating with other artists, including 360 and Kimbra. Most recently, Johns took to his official Instagram account to share a photo of himself in the studio with Australian producer M-Phazes.
