Scar Stories is a remarkable Australian charity organisation that benefits young adult cancer survivors, not only through raising funds and awareness but through empowering survivors with their trademark ‘scar portraits’.
After taking a photo of her own cancer scar in 2011 and sharing the imagine online, Scar Stories founder Jasmine Gailer realised that she felt a renewed sense of confidence and empowerment by showing off what most keep hidden following cancer treatment.
For their latest initiative, RockScars, Scar Stories pair young adult cancer survivors with their favourite rock bands to participate in a fun and creative photo shoot, the results of which will be turned into gig-style posters to be exhibited and sold.

Their latest pairing involved 22-year-old Queensland native and osteosarcoma survivor Jaymee Tully, who got to spend a day living the rock star life, complete with a limousine ride and hanging out with Brisbane hard rock heroes Dead Letter Circus.
“Dead Letter Circus didn’t hesitate to team up with cancer charity Scar Stories to help young adult cancer survivors rock their scars during a fun, creative photo shoot in Brisbane recently,” reads a press release from Scar Stories.
“Some of the most inspirational, real life people I’ve met are those that have met those kind of hardships and pulled through them with grace and positivity,” vocalist Kim Benzie said of the band’s day with Jaymee.

With a day Jaymee is certain to remember for many years to come complete, the posters will now be sold to raise funds for free creative workshops for cancer patients and survivors between 17 and 35 years, as well as other Scar Stories creative projects.
