Police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man, whose body was found at the campsite of the current instalment of Falls Festival in Byron Bay. A police spokeswoman said the man was found dead at about 7.30am at the revellers campsite, a section of the North Byron Parklands where the event is held.
According to News Corp, police are not treating the man’s death as suspicious. Tweed Byron police duty officer Inspector Darren Steel said the Brisbane man was unconscious and not breathing when friends found him this morning. “Ambulance attended and attempted resuscitation but it was unsuccessful,” he said.
“Police are currently interviewing a number of witnesses and a brief will be prepared for the coroner,” added Insp Steel. “We’re still interviewing people at this point in time so we haven’t determined the cause of death.” It is unclear whether the man’s body was found in a tent or outside.
Falls Festival organisers have issued a statement in which they write, “We’re extremely sad to report the following. On Wednesday December 31, 2014 a male was found deceased onsite at The Falls Music & Arts Festival in Byron, at this stage police are not treating it as suspicious.”
“The deceased has been identified and relatives have been notified,” the missive continues. “A report is being prepared for the coroner and the festival cannot comment further as it is a police matter. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this terribly sad time.”
