Ahead of their Australia Day performance at the Corner Hotel with pals The Bennies, Joelistics, Curse Ov Dialect, Fear Like Us, and Stockades, The Smith Street Band have unveiled a surprise new digital and 7″ single, ‘Wipe That Shit-Eating Grin Off Your Punchable Face’, a scathing attack on the Australian government’s treatment of asylum seekers.
The record comes packaged with Shaun Thatcher’s ghastly painting of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on the cover and features the B-side ‘God in the Name of the Father’. Both of the songs were recorded in Forrest, Victoria as part of the sessions for the band’s critically acclaimed 2014 album Throw Me In The River.
The band and their longtime label, Poison City Records, have vowed to donate 100 percent of the digital sales until the end of February, and a large portion of the 7″ sales (including 100 percent o fall profit from records sold at the Corner Hotel on Australia Day) to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre are Australia’s leading organisation for asylum seekers. The ASRC are completely independent and receive no government funding and advocate directly on behalf of asylum seekers in Australia, assisting some of the most disadvantaged people in the community.
Both tracks will be available digitally from The Smith Street Band and Poison City Bandcamp sites from 9am tomorrow (Tuesday, 13th January). The ‘Wipe That Shit-Eating Grin Off Your Punchable Face’ 7” is officially out 23rd January, with pre-orders now available from the Poison City e-store.
Meanwhile, the band’s Australia Day performance will likewise raise funds for the ASRC, The Refugee Council of Australia, and Oxfam. In its fifth year running, the annual Australia Day fundraiser events have already raised over $25,000 for these great organisations.
