Barcelona based two-piece ZA! Are bringing their musical circus down under this month.

Two guys a dozen instruments, one body and a world of emotions, ZA! Mine Cuban jazz, post rock, Jamaican dancehall, grunge, industrial noise, math rock and even Balinese polyrhythms to create multi-layered musical madness.

If that all sounds too much for you to comprehend, that’s ok, a ZA! show is something that has to be seen to be believed.

Set to perform at Sydney Festival, and MONA FOMA festival as well as a number of headline shows, we chatted to the duo about some of the tracks they listen to while on tour. It’s a pretty eclectic list (as expected) check it out!

Ndiogou Seck – ‘Interesse +’

“No song can get that flow with so little elements. It always cheers us up.”

7 Notas 7 Colores – ‘En El Fuego’

“We grew up with the rhymes of this Spanish rapper form the suburbs of Barcelona. He’s a motherfucker with bad mouth and good groove.”

Steve Reich – ‘Six Pianos’

“That’s a music for driving really fast on a foreign highway, or for sleeping on trains.”

Art Blakey – ‘Moanin”

“A classic for starting a tour and having patience in Barcelona traffic jams.”

Ruben Blades – ‘Pedro Navaja’

“That’s more for ending a tour, packing things while you decodify your waist to the beat of the congas.”

At the Drive-In – ‘Pattern Against User’

“Song for singing out loud, let’s see who does the best parody of Cedric Zabala.”

Tortoise – ‘Djed’

“For those moments driving when you could shoot a car TV spot.”

June of 44 – ‘Peel Away Velleity’

“This song is to start a conversation about drummers and weird math rythms.”

Joe K-Plan – ‘Tête De La Course’

“Former Spanish math rock duo. When you play it, it feels like a solid Redbull, granite flavour.”

Joaquin Sabina – ‘Asi Estoy Yo Sin Ti’

“A song for making the silliest metaphors, for impersonating Sabina mixing him with Spazz or the Mana singer, and for missing our wives when we’re away from home.”
