Purity Ring – ‘Begin Again’

Canadian electronic duo Purity Ring are gearing up to release their sophomore albumAnother Eternity – the followup to their acclaimed 2012 debut, Shrines. Having already shared ‘Push Pull’ – their first song in two years – the pair have just dropped the second glimpse of their anticipated upcoming LP.

‘Begin Again’ is one of Purity Ring’s more moodier cuts – starting off dark and slow with dramatic keys and Megan James’ high-pitched vocals whispering underwater. And then, it bursts – exploding with razor-sharp synths taking the track to dizzying new heights of emotional synth-pop. (DM)

Cakes Da Killa & Uniiqu3 – ‘Get 2 Werk’

Cakes Da Killa is one of rap’s most exciting upcoming voices, who after releasing three mixtapes (Easy Bake Oven Vo.1 , The Eulogy, Hunger Pangs), an insane banger of a single ‘I  Run This Club’ and visited Australia twice should be receiving 100 times the accolades he his receiving now.

Ghostface Killah & BadBadNotGood – ‘Ray Gun’

With BadBadNotGood leading the charge with a chilled-out, lounge jazz beat, ‘Ray Gun’ is oddly reminiscent of Ghostface Killah’s early solo work and the crackly loops that characterise so much of DOOM’s output. Both Ghostface and DOOM are given ample time to flex their respective lyrical muscle, each sounding as sharp as ever, before the track explodes with trumpets and wild drumming. (GM)

Dorsal Fins – ‘Mind Renovation’

With this single already making waves on the blogosphere, with its warm horns, tight arrangements, and dynamic vocals from Jarrad Brown and Ella Thompson, all eyes are now on the band’s forthcoming LP, which sees the group collaborate to create a genre-spanning sound that is held together by the excitement, sincerity, and instrumental prowess of its ten or so musicians, which famously includes mastermind Liam McGorry of Saskwatch and Eagle & The Worm. The fresh tune ‘Zond’ sees the psych-space rockers step even closer to the zany world of dancin’ synthesisers and drum machines, whilst pertaining to their usual kaleidoscopic trip of psychedelica. This time the loveable Nick Allbrook takes the lead vocal reigns, howling through the jovial song.
