Local hip hop legend Seth Sentry is currently preparing to embark of one of his ever biggest Australian tours.

So what’s he been doing lately? After touring and touring and touring, Seth’s been writing and recording his next album, and, much to the delight of fans, the first taste is ready. His first single ‘Run’ is Seth at his best, expanding on his established knack for nimble rapping and big, boss hooks.

To celebrate Sentry’s national tour and his single ‘Run’ we chatted to the talented MC about some of the record that have shaped his career.

The  Deltron 3030 – The  Deltron 3030

2000, 75 Ark

“This was a life changing album for me I was probably 18 when it came out and it completely changed what I thought you could with rap. Throughout, Del stays in character as Deltron, intergalactic rap battler in a dystopian future, year 3030. His flows are so inventive and unique and perfectly compliment Dan the Automators orchestral and lush production.

Kid Koala’s cuts are some of the most musical i’d ever heard. Everything just aligned. I toured with Kid Koala and his group “the slew” a while back and picked his brain on the album. Such a great moment for me.  Aesop Rock -NONE SHALL PASS

I was very much anticipating this album so I think I actually pre ordered it on line. It was really a huge step up for Aes in terms of song structure and giving some space to his flows. He has a tendency to be so dense lyrically it can become a little overwhelming. This album struck a perfect balance between delivery and content. I put this on whenever I want to disappear for a while, I must have heard it a thousand times and I still don’t think I know all the lyrics. Aes riggedy is a motherfucking genius.”

Eminem – Slim Shady LP

1999, Aftermath/ Interscope/ Web

“After hearing ‘My Name Is’ on the radio my mate Chris bought this & we listened to it on school camp.

I just remember playing it on the bus trip and just being completely teleported into Eminem’s scary, alternate bizarro world for the entire duration.

I’d never really heard shit like that before. So dark and disturbing but so funny and clever.”

Xzibit – Speed Of Life

1996, Loud/ RCA

Not sure how we ended up with this album in the disc wallet back in the day but I’m glad we did.

I know every lyric off this album. Xzibit is at his best here, the song dedicated to his son, his beautiful tracks, ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Birds Eye View’ are classics. During the intro theres a speech sampled from Taxi driver which I knew word for word before I’d seen the movie.

I still bang this album once every six months or so.

Prince Paul – Prince Among Thieves

1999, Tommy Boy/ Warner Bros.

“This album is severely underrated. This and Delton 3030 should honest be required listening in school.

I got this randomly from my local music shop. One of the best purchases I ever made. It’s a movie with every rapper playing a character in the film.

Kool Keith as the kooky weapon supplier is perfect. This taught me just how cohesive an album could be while still having individual dope songs.”

Nirvana – Nevermind

1999, DGC

“I really wanted to make it an “all rap affair” with this selection of albums but it wouldn’t be completely honest.

This album was huge for me. I remember catching ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ on Rage and it just really spoke to me.

Such angst. I still play this album all the time, especially when i’m driving. Every single god damn song is incredible. I do wish everyone would stop covering Nirvana songs though.”

Lyricist Lounge 2 /  Soundbombing 2

2000 / 1999, Rawkus Records

“I’m kind of cheating here by picking two at once but I always confuse which song is on which so fuck the rules. They’re both dope as fuck compilations by the now extinct Rawkus Records.

I remember the first time I ever took a pill, a friend played me Pharaohe Monches verse from ‘Oh No’ and it blew my fucking mind. “Huh, hallelujah, Pharoahe Monch’ll do ya

Maintain the same frame of mind screw ya! Get the picture, sit ya, seat ya, preacher with scripturesI’m equipped to rip ya, reach ya.” Good god. I’ve never been the same since.”
