Australia’s live music scene has taken a few hard beatings in 2015 with venues closing in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, not to mention Perth losing not one, not two, but three performing spaces, it seems venues have to do a little more than just host great live music to stay open, which is exactly what an Adelaide intends to do.

Jive, situated on 181 Hindley Street has bigs plans to reinvigorate itself not just as a home of live local music, but a daytime bar and record store too for three days a week, as the Herald Sun writes.

Slated for around Easter time (April) Jive will have a record store upstairs, whilst the downstairs bar will be open for a cheeky daytime bev for those passing-by, however there are no plans for hot food.

Owner Tam Boakes spoke with the newspaper about her future intentions for the Adelaide hotspot, “I was looking for something else to add to be open more because I hate that it’s such a big venue and we can only open when we have enough punters to justify it.”

On the record store plans, she explained, “I have a couple of friends who have a monstrous vinyl record collection in pretty much brand new condition, and they were thinking of selling them through Gumtree.”

“So we were in discussion over a few beers and thought about maybe setting it up upstairs, we thought, ‘let’s try a shop seeing it complements what Jive does’.”

Integrating the record store with Jive’s primary function, live music, she continued, “We are thinking of particularly local bands if they’re doing a vinyl launch to do an in-store. “We’re also thinking of doing daytime launch gigs, like back in the day when Big Star (on Rundle St) used to do in-stores.”

This is an exciting move by Boakes and The Jive as a whole who acknowledges the rough patch Aussie live music venues are going through at the moment, “It’s no secret it’s been a tough time for venues lately so we are trying to bring in something new and to extend the hours more to try and get more clientele.”

Keep up to date with Jive’s happenings via their website, the venue has some massive gigs coming up including Darren Hanlon, Tkay Maidza and The Ocean.
