There’s no denying that sometimes folk from the US are a little self-involved and love to big-up their nation, especially when it comes to self-proclaiming they’re the catalyst for great music and film, often true, however their most recent case of ‘Murica-pride is a little off.

Multiple major American music publications have joined us in celebrating the release of the sleepy ‘Depreston’ from Aussie slack-rock favourite, Courtney Barnett, however they’ve misinterpreted the song’s meaning, and it’s pretty hilarious.

Described by many of our favourite musical blogs (Stereogum, Consequence of Sound and SPIN) as “a meandering and mid-tempo tune about moving to California, then realizing how bummed-out your town actually is” which, to be fair, may be due to the lyrics “This place seems depressing / It’s a ‘Californian bungalow in a cul-de-sac’)” and because there is in fact a place named Preston in California. However as we all know, this is wrong, our girl Court ain’t glumly singin’ about California at all.

‘Depreston’ is actually a tune about a time when Barnett was living in a somewhat sad state of affairs in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, and the three-split video to accompany the track displays a car view of Melbourne’s north. If you need cement proof, check out this NPR Music Tiny Desk set where Barnett explains the song’s meaning (jump to 8:43 mark):

This is the second single to fall from Barnett’s forthcoming debut record, Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit which has already seen the racing ‘Pedestrian At Best’ and will hit shelves March 20th.

Courtney Barnett has announced an Aussie national tour to back the release of her new record, and will be charming the hell out of punters at this weekend’s glorious Golden Plains Nine festival.
