Something To Tell You

I wrote most of ‘Something to tell you’ one morning while waiting for the washing machine cycle to finish. I remember trying to peg my clothes on the line as quickly as possible, before I forgot how the lyrics went, the song’s really about having feelings of redundant well wishing, unfortunately some pants I had actually got stolen off the line that day.

Never Be Your Man

‘Never be your man’ I think is a pretty simple song about unrequited love, it started off pretty slow and heavy but after i’d finished recording the final version it had become really up beat and poppy. The little synth lines in the chorus are what really make the song, shifting the vibe from a barrel of summer disappointment to spectacular new years party.

Dialtone

Dialtone I wrote, thinking about a few different stories growing up in Christchurch pre-earthquake and how its becoming a pretty different place now. I know its been the subject matter for a lot of artists from the city, but the thing that struck me most is how my memories in the future will be quite different to someone else’s and seemed kind of important to preserve in some way for myself,

Baby Give Up

Baby give up is a song about the pursuit of love a sort of “will I? Won’t I” kind of deal. Its a pretty straight 60’s pop tune I guess i’d been listening to the yard birds pretty solidly and had been writing in a similar tonal pallet time but then I added heaps of synths and made it soundly slightly more sci fi or something.

Best Weekend

Best Weekend sort of functions as a personal joke. You see, Sometimes – I can be so focused on the future and suffer such a generally pessimistic attitude that I really forget to enjoy the present, Even if I was having the time of my life I’m sure I could find a way to worry about something else to distract myself from actually having a good time and living in the moment.
