Specialising in a heady mix of polyrhythmic, art-rock and sugary, soulful indie pop, PHOX, will be making their debut Australian appearance this March at a very special one-off Australian show at Newtown Social Club in Sydney on Tuesday 10th March. This one off show comes after their appearance at the Auckland International Arts Festival earlier in March.

To celebrate their visit, the band gave us a musical run down of their home town of Wisconsin.

Venue

We’ve been playing at the High Noon Saloon in Madison ever since we started. We actually got tricked into playing our first headline show there by a friend’s band. We walked up to the door and saw the first posters for a PHOX show and we were stunned. Cool club. Cowboy vibe. Good beer & better bartenders. www.high-noon.com

Record Store

There’s a record store called Strictly Discs that had us play in their basement (which is where they keep all the good records) for our release last summer. It was so dang fun, and they always have a free keg of good brew on special event days. They don’t even ID! I feel like that’s okay for an almost-30 year old man to say. Right?

Band

DOLORES is our band crush. They’re a young bunch of guys who play fast, funky, fun fugues. All of that is true beside the fugues part.

Song

Paul Otteson has a song called The Battle of Prairie du Chien, which involves a small city somewhat near to Madison. It was the sight of the only American Civil War battle fought on Wisconsin soil. There were no casualties.

Bar

Our bar is called Merchant, and while they’re known for their craft cocktails (get something with egg), you’ll be most pleased to try the deep-fried buffalo cheese curds.

Restaurant

One of our trusty eateries, and trust us, there are dozens, is actually disguised as a coffee shop. You might mot guess it, but Johnson Public House makes some of the best sandwiches in town. Try the roast beef with a side of the Sriacha aoili. Get greens instead of chips, and split the sandwich and a Chemex of something light.

Landmark

As for landmarks, it’s though because Madison is (I believe) the only city built on an isthmus in the entire world. Now, this is mainly because building a city on an isthmus is a pretty dodgy idea. It does however make for really beautiful views of the lakes on either side from just about anywhere in town. Try the state capital lawn for a picnic, or the Union Terrace for an afternoon of drinking outside.

Now you know all about Wisconson, check out one of the best band from Wisconson PHOX at their show on Wednesday the 10th March at Newtown Social Club, info here: www.chuggentertainment.com
