Sydney electro duo Cosmo’s Midnight are currently on national tour in celebration of their blissfully layered single ‘Snare’, promising a tight and dynamic offering, honed from performances at Beyond The Valley, Ouija Beats, Splendour In The Grass, Outside In festival and more over 2014.

The twin brothers from Sydney first came to attention through their mature and expansive remixes, reworking the best business of Anna Lunoe, Snakadaktal, JaysWays and Destiny’s Child; bringing on waves of SoundCloud plays in the hundreds of thousands, to celebrate their success (and tour) we decided to chat to Patrick, one half of the duo about some of the records that shaped them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sex Sugar Magik

1991, Warner Bros.

I don’t know anyone who wasn’t obsessed with RHCP at some point in their life. Blood Sex Sugar Magik.

In highshool, music class was spent trying to learn John Frusciante’s drug-addled Untitled works, reading Anthony Kiedis edgy as fuck auto-biography and trying to cover Under the Bridge, Aeroplane, Strip my Mind, etc. I know I just listed a bunch that aren’t on Blood Sex Sugar Magik, but that was the LP that started it all.

Justice- Across The Universe

2008, Atlantic

I was introduced to electronic music in like early highschool by my older brother (not my twin) and was drawn in by Daft Punk, Bag Raiders. MSTRKRFT. Boyz Noize, etc.

In in 2008 (I think year 9) Justice’s Across the Universe dropped and completely hooked me in and made me obsessed with the production of electronic music. Their stuff merged the sampling genius of Daft Punk’s the rawest, trashiest, hugest sound design I’d ever heard. I fantasized about going to their shows forever, listening to their Live Album endlessly and watched their US tour DVD.

Fave tracks: ‘Phantom Pt2’, ‘Genesis’, ‘D.A.N.C.E’, and ‘Waters Of Nazareth’.

Gorillaz – Demon Days

2005, Parlophone

This album is just too good. The enigmatic characters, awesome aesthetic and genius left-field pop production make Demon Days such a big album for me.

Tracks that I listened on repeat: ‘Feel Good Inc’, ‘Kids with Guns’, ‘Dare’ and ‘Dirty Harry’.

Daft Punk – Discovery

2001, Virgin

Shout outs to the French for making two of my all time favourite artists!  Discovery should be on everyone’s list to be honest.

It’s a masterful display of sampling and literally every track is a timeless classic, I still listen to this album every so often and it’s still just as fresh and awesome.

Fave tracks: ‘Something About Us’, ‘Digital Love’, ‘Face to Face’, ‘One More Time’ (RIP Romanthony).

Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma

2010, Warp

Not only only does our first single ‘Phantasm’ share titles with one of Flylo’s better tracks on Until the Quiet Comes, but our artist name Cosmo’s Midnight also shares half the same name as Flylo’s 3rd LP Cosmogramma, WOW!

Although those name similarities are entirely coincidental, Flying Lotus was a huge inspiration to me. The blissed-out, low-fi, experimental hip-hop was just mindblowing for me, because I’d never really heard this side of electronic music before and it really pushed me to expand my musical horizons. Thanks Flylo!
