While we all know Natalie Imbruglia as the national treasure who first entered our hearts with her 1997 hit single ‘Torn’, many may not realise that the track was in fact a cover of a 1995 song by the LA-based group Ednaswap.

However, the shocking revelation pales in comparison to more recent news that Imbruglia has lent her vocal talents to a cover of a Daft Punk song. No, it’s not ‘Around The World’ (wouldn’t that be awesome, though?), but ‘Instant Crush’.

The track originally featured a heavily vocodered Julian Casablancas of The Strokes and appeared on the French electronic duo’s divisive 2013 album Random Access Memories. Readers can check out Imbruglia’s cover embedded below.

The track is the first single from Male, the follow-up to Imbruglia’s last album, Come To Life, which was released back in 2009. Male is a compilation of cover songs originally written and performed by male artists.

As Stereogum reports, in addition to the radically different cover of ‘Instant Crush’, there’s renditions of songs by Iron & Wine, Death Cab For Cutie, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, Josh Pike, Damian Rice, and The Cure.

“On the original version, you can’t really hear what the song is about because of the effect that Julian’s voice has, which I love, by the way,” said Imbruglia of her ‘Instant Crush’ cover.

“However, it is such a beautiful story that I want people to hear it and connect with the words. I’m really proud of the way it turned out.” Certainly can’t knock the hustle. What do you think of Imbruglia’s Norah Jones-y cover?
