One of Melbourne’s and Tonedeaf’s favourite radio stations, Triple R 102.7 FM, has just announced that it will hold its annual Radiothon from Friday 13 August until Sunday 22 August 2010.  Triple R is a fully independent, non-profit community radio station which relies on listener subscriptions to keep running – listener funded radio.

Radiothon is the time of year to Make Contact with Triple R and support the station with an annual subscription. Listeners can expect to hear a lot of space and sci-fi sounds over the coming weeks including a series of remakes of famous moments in sci-fi films.

Recently Triple R asked some of the people close to Triple R to share their stories of how they first made contact with the station.

How Fee B-Squared (RRR Breakfasters) Made Contact:

”I went to a semi rural high school where, like most schools, commercial radio was de rigueur.  I remember an older kid listening to the radio from his boom box on the school bus and when I asked which station he was listening to, he kind of rolled his eyeballs and said “Triple R.”  It was the early 80s and I can’t remember which track was playing, I just remember wanting to make further contact with Triple R as soon as I got home.  I tuned in here and there for quite a while and once I could afford it, I subscribed and felt rewarded immediately.  The music was incredibly diverse, nothing was play-listed, the chat was interesting and it just felt ‘real’.

I am glad I made contact with Triple R all those years ago and thank Stephen Black, that kid on the school bus with the boom box, for kick starting me on a journey that has taken me far beyond my bus stop, to a place I feel so fortunate to be.”

Fee went on to volunteer at the station during Radiothon, then in the office, then got a rare paid gig working in the office before being asked to present a program . Fee’s now been hosting The Breakfasters every weekday for almost ten years, you can see her full story atwww.rrr.org.au/news
