Melbourne’s neo-psych six piece Lurch & Chief have finally released their highly anticipated second EP titled Breathe. Produced by the legendary Lindsay Gravina (Roland S Howard, Magic Dirt, Violent Soho), this release from the band continues a long-term collaboration with Gravina, expanding their dynamic sound into a darker, swirl psych soundscape.

Forming as a creative outlet for a group of close friends Alexander Trevisan (Lurch), Hayden Somerville (Chief), Lilibeth Hall, Brendan Anderson, Joel Rennison and Josh Lane in late 2012, the band have continued to enchant and amass audiences nation-wide with their smoky psych jams.

In support of the new EP, the band are about to embark on a huge national tour, and to celebrate the band’s Brendan Anderson curated an other-worldly mixtape featuring 20 tracks that never fail to melt their minds. Check it out below and be sure to catch the band on the road this May and June- info at www.lurchandchief.com.

Brian Jonestown Massacre – ‘Anenome’
A track that sends you into the ultimate chilled groove. No matter how you’re feeling, the vibe from this will make you more content than you could imagine.

I’lls – ‘Plans Only Drawn’
Super talented Melbourne outfit with yet another deep, emotive radiohead-esque number. Instantly releases endorphins through your brain.

Connan Mockasin – ‘Faking Jazz Together’
A dark, self reflective tune that is somewhat eerily depressing. However the Depressing, dark aspects is what makes it so beautiful. What a touching song and what an artist.

Erik Satie – ‘Trois Gymnopedies’
Possibly one of my favourite classical pieces I’ve ever come across (not that I know many). It manages to continually awaken the deepest parts of my emotions and consciousness.

Dungen – ‘Fredag’
Another beautiful instrumental piece by the Swedish outfit Dungen. Amazing band and an early inspiration of Kevin Parker in Tame Impala. If you dig tame and can handle swedish vocals check these dudes out.

Massive Attack – ‘Exchange’
Perfect late afternoon dreamy track that forces you to relax and let go.

Tame Impala – ‘When The Feelings In The Core’
Bliss, bliss, bliss and more bliss. My Favourite tame song and quite possibly my favourite song of all time. This rare B-side from Kevin’s recording sessions of their first EP is floating around somewhere online and nails 60’s psych rock. So deep and feels like the universe is opening up to you and speaking to you from behind the veil. This song has changed my life.

The Beatles – ‘Within You Without You’
No words can describe what this track is or what it delivers. Well maybe a few – Sitars, George, India, oh and just the secrets to the Comos. No biggie. Mix with substances at your own peril.

John Coltrane – ‘A Love Supreme Part 1 Acknowledgement’
It’s simple, John Coltrane is God. Spin this jazz tune and see if you can escape his charm that sucks you deep into the recesses of your mind. He sure knows how to play the Pied Piper.

Radiohead – ‘Bloom’
The Modern day Beatles that just can’t help but reinvent the way music is made and listened to. They are the masters of sound. This song perfectly encapsulates this mastery and their magical ability to induce the deepest sense of feeling in the listener and take them on a journey that doesn’t seem like it will ever end. Absolute perfection.

Blue Angel Lounge – ‘LSD and The Search For God’
Lets just say that the song title really does speak for itself.

Smoke City – ‘Underwater Love’
An enchanting song that is best listened to when walking through nature. Pulls you out of – or rather into – reality quick smart.

The Myrrors – ‘Warpainting’
Do yourself a favour – escape your daily responsibilities, get some goodies and retreat into nature and then listen to this number. Let’s just say that I’ve seen some things to this track. Very Intense.

The Dandy Warhols – ‘Nietzsche’
Many people would be surprised to know that this is the Dandy Warhols. With this track they’ve hit the nail on the head of full on neo-psych rock that manages to swallow you up and then spit you back out in a matter of minutes. How oddly satisfying.

Lone – ‘Minor Suns’
Beautiful track by the incredible bedroom artist Lone, sends you into a waking lucid dream within about six seconds.

Caribou – ‘Sun’
Oh Caribou you are too good. Treat yourself to this full on dance track, but beware: You might lose your mind.

Pepe Bradock – ‘Deep Burnt’
My favourite minimal deep house track at the moment. It’s a french house track from ’96 and is perfect for any mood, any time. Be sure to treat yourself to this 10 minute track as it is one of my little secret gems that I found online after several hours of surfing through complete and utter crap on youtube. For every good minimal deep house track there seems to be 14,000 very, very ordinary ones.

Gigamesh – ‘Everything In It’s Right Place’ (Radiohead remix)
Magical remix. I don’t want to say too much about this as the music will do more than just speak for itself, but it always provides me with the ultimate sense of feeling comfortable with my place in the world and feels like it taps me into headspace where im fully connected with all around me. Spin this track wisely and don’t over play it!

Aphex Twin – ‘Xtal’
A mastermind musical genius who seems to be before his time, reflects through this track exactly why he is so respected. The soundscapes and vocal sample seems to push the walls of your consciousness wide open and makes you feel as if you’ve never heard sound before. It hurts my head to know this was made 23 years ago.

The Field – ‘They Won’t See Me’
After constantly listening to the one of the Field’s other tracks ‘Over The Ice’ non-stop for the last two years, this one has recently jumped out at me. Very similar to Xtal by Aphex Twin in terms of the unbelievable state of consciousness that it can take you to. Be careful driving while this track is on. I’ve come close to crashing too many times to this.
