With so many great artists gathered in one place for four days, it’s little wonder Byron Bay Bluesfest has developed a reputation as a breeding ground for impromptu collaborations and unexpected guest spots.

Especially seeing as this year saw the long-running blues, roots, folk, and rock festival bring one of its most impressive lineups to date to the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, including Alabama Shakes, Hozier, Angus & Julia Stone, and more.

However, the best collaboration of this year’s Bluesfest did not happen on stage. In fact, no fans were even able to witness it, as it was confined to just the artists involved and one lucky spectator who happened to catch the whole thing on video.

After Alabama Shakes finished their two-show tenure at Bluesfest 2015, frontwoman Brittany Howard joined Stax icon Mavis Staples and Grammy Award-winner Angélique Kidjo for a glorious a capella version of The Staple Singers’ 1972 hit ‘I’ll Take You There’.
