In news that will likely surprise few of those who still haven’t jumped aboard the seemingly unstoppable Ed Sheeran bandwagon, the West Yorkshire singer-songwriter was recently revealed as the number one artist for putting people to sleep.

No, it’s not what you think. This isn’t everyone admitting that the best-selling Sheeran is boring, rather it’s that the ginger ninja’s sweetly sung, dulcet acoustic sounds are the number one choice to send people off into glorious slumber.

As Billboard reports, Swedish streaming giant Spotify have shared their most streamed sleep songs, i.e. the songs that most frequently appear on users’ sleep-themed playlists, and Ed Sheeran not only topped the list, he had a total of seven entries.

The only other artist who had multiple entries was Sam Smith, who had a total of three tracks in the list, including his mega-hit ‘Stay With Me’, which came second to Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’, and his acoustic rendition of ‘Latch’, which closed out the chart.

To put the figures in context, the list was compiled from data culled from some 2.8 million sleep-themed playlists. According to Spotify’s VP of Global Communications Angela Watts, ‘sleep’ is one of the streaming service’s most popular categories.

Sheeran’s dominance on sleep playlists could partly explain why he was Spotify’s most streamed artist of 2014, ahead of Eminem, Coldplay, Calvin Harris, and Katy Perry. Sheerhan’s best-selling sophomore full-length effort, X, was also the service’s most streamed album.
