A week may have already passed since we wrestled for the most unique releases for Record Store Day, however it appears the most sought after item you nearly knocked someone out for wasn’t actually that White Stripes album, it was something very different.

According to figures collected by the guys at music’s online bible, Billboard (via Stereogum), the highest selling special release of the day was in fact a cassette tape, not a vinyl record.

Yep, the most bought item of Record Store Day was Metallica’s No Life Til Leather, which sold almost 3,000 copies, edging out The White Stripes’ vinyl reissue of Get Behind Me Satan, which came in at second place.

As bizarre as this sounds, it actually doesn’t come as such a surprise that this was the top seller.

Metallica are of course, one of the world’s biggest bands and their unique idea of releasing a very special cassette that represents their early demo tapes would seem super appealing to any super-fan, it’s just a little funny that a such a novelty outsold what is meant to be the true purpose of Record Store Day – vinyl records.

This wasn’t the only little surprise story of Record Store Day. There were plenty of disgruntled Tool fans who were damn pissed after they purchased the prog-rock group’s 1992 Opiate EP, only to get home and discover they actually had U2’s Songs Of Innocence vinyl in the sleeve, ha!

And a little more on the no surprise side of the spectrum, eBay saw plenty of rare Record Store Day items pop-up fetching for some pretty ridiculous prices, even Chet Faker’s 12″ being listed for quite the small fortune.
