Viral marketing can be a gamble. It’s a precarious balancing act and takes a good amount of trust between an artist and their fans, and the rest of the internet too. Naturally, it’s seen its share of disasters.

Robin Thicke, R Kelly, and Bill Cosby have all seen the the ways in which something as simple as a call-out to fans or a Twitter Q&A can go awry when you overestimate just how much respect you’re actually afforded by the public.

And then there’s Afrojack. The Dutch EDM superstar recently took the whole concept of trolling and turned it on its head, no pun intended, by getting in on the joke and asking his fans to come on in and join him.

As InTheMix notes, the story actually begins back in April, when Afrojack’s fellow Dutchman Sid Frisjes was a little unsatisfied with his vacation photos and asked users on 4Chan to Photoshop a snap of him standing next to the Eiffel Tower.

Frisjes’ innocuous and somewhat naive request — “Can someone Photoshop the Eiffel Tower under my finger?” — launched one of the biggest memes of the year, with users quickly making Frisjes regret his post entirely (see the results via Mashable).

Afrojack, who recently happened to be taking lunch on a Parisian balcony with a splendrous view of the Eiffel Tower, decided to post his own photo and asked fans on Facebook, “Can someone Photoshop this so it looks like I’m touching the Eiffel Tower??”

The internet was quickly aflutter with images similar to the edited shots of Frisjes – some good, some bad, some ugly, and some that missed the light-hearted mark Afrojack was going for and went back into trolling territory.
