If you follow our fortnightly music jobs column, you’ll have seen quite a few jobs pop up in the radio industry, whether it’s a position as on-air talent, or a tinkerer behind the scenes, making sure everything is getting out over the airwaves alright.

You may have even considered applying for one of the jobs, but there’s just one thing stopping you – you don’t have any experience. Radio is a tough industry to break into and there’s relatively few resources for a novice to hone their skills.

Thankfully, Triple R, one of Melbourne’s favourite independent broadcasters, is offering 12 people aged 16-25 one hell of a foot-in-the-door opportunity. Starting from 20th July, they’ll be offering 12 lucky wannabe radio pros free broadcaster training.

The station is looking for 12 people from culturally diverse backgrounds to fill the classes, which will take place at Triple R studios in Brunswick East from 6.30pm-9pm for eight Mondays over nine weeks. Participants will have to commit to the full eight Monday evenings.

The aim of the course will be to educate the participants in how to produce, prepare, and present a radio show, as well as how to fully operate one of Triple R’s radio studios, giving all the participants a good footing in broadcasting fundamentals.

Best of all, following completion of the course, each participant will be invited to submit a demo for assessment, which could potentially lead you to being added to the station’s graveyard roster. From there? Who knows!

Triple R are anticipating high demand so make sure you let the station know as soon as possible if you’re looking to take part in this exciting opportunity. If you’re not interested, but know someone who would be, feel free to pass the info on.

To apply, send a submission email to [email protected] by 12pm Friday, 29th May. Please include the following info:

How old are you?

If you were doing a 3RRR show this week, what are 5 songs that you would play?

If you had a radio show on 3RRR, what sort of show would you like it to be / what would you like to explore in your show?

Do you already have any radio experience?

Where do you discover new music and culture?

Tell us your story – a little bit about yourself, what you’re into, and where you live, work or study.

Are you into the idea of presenting a radio show, or working behind the scenes?

If you’re not available for Monday evenings, is there another time of week when you would be keen to participate?

This is a great opportunity to not only earn important skills in a competitive industry, but an incredible chance to get your foot in the door of one of Melbourne’s most beloved radio stations. Head on over the official Triple R website for more details.
