We’re always sad to see another Aussie live music venue shut its doors and even more so when it happens in Adelaide, a city that we’ve long touted as one of Australia’s most happening but underrated music cities.

Late last week Teresa Scarcella, longtime director of The Cavern, a beloved CBD venue that in the past has hosted acts from a range of genres, including rock, hip-hop, and hardcore, announced via Facebook that she would not be renewing her lease on the venue.

“This week has been a challenging and soul searching week and I have had to come to the hardest decision of my life but it’s a decision that I am happy with,” Scarcella wrote on her personal Facebook page. “The Cavern Club next Friday night will be opening their doors for the very last time.”

“The decision has come about after meeting with the most amazing landlord, but my 10-year term is now up and I just simply could not commit to signing to a new lease.” Scarcella cited the stresses of running the busy venue as motivating her decision.

“I will definately still be involved in supporting live bands as I have discovered another great room for bands, much easier loading, still walking distance to public transport, and right in the middle of Adelaide… that I am in talks with the venue owner to put shows on there.”

In her farewell missive, Scarcella thanked “all the bands and patrons… [and] beautiful staff” who supported the venue over the years. “You all are a bunch of champions in my eyes and I hope to continue our friendship as we all become like a family,” she wrote.

“These past 10 years have taught me a lot about the live music scene and I just want to encourage everyone to get off their back sides and go and support the live music scene,” Scarcella added. “There are some amazing bands out there that deserve a crowd and a fan base.”

The Cavern Adelaide was inspired by the legendary Liverpool venue of the same name, where The Beatles famously played some of their earliest gigs. The venue became a staple of the Adelaide live scene, hosting performances from a wide array of upcoming bands.
