Established in early 2014, Glass Ocean have risen to become one of Sydney’s exciting progressive rock talents. This Friday the 22nd of May the five piece are kicking off the anticipated Stellar Evolution Tour, which will see the guys cruising on through the country till June.

The tour, which will hit up venues in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast, comes in support of the band’s highly anticipated second EP, titled Glass Ocean II, which is slated to arrive Friday, 8th May.

In celebration of the tour and the great music Australia produces, the band have curated a list of their favourite Aussie bands of all time, check it out below and don’t miss these guys as they roll into your town.

Plini

“You know that warm feeling you get from watching your favourite Disney or Pixar movie? Plini has found a way to bottle that feeling and distill it within his guitar wizardry. It’s instrumental cinematic Prog-rock meets ‘the most hopeful you’ve ever been in your life’ type shit.

I can’t explain how he does what he does, it’s just beautiful. His sense of rhythm and harmonic progression will keep you addicted. And his story telling knows no limits. If I could drive any point home about Plini, it would be that his music really ‘speaks’ to you.”

Karnivool

“I cannot write something on favourite Oz bands without mentioning the Kings! Karnivool absolutely rocked my world in High School. I don’t need to go into a mass breakdown of why this band is good, we all know that.

They have paved the way for bands like us and we should be forever grateful. One thing I particularly admire about Karnivool is their humility. They seem to have such a deep connection with their fans because they see what they do as purely an artistic voyage. Much respect for the ‘Vool’!”

Northlane

“So putting my friends on here may be a little biased. BUT, how could you not ignore these guys. My old band ‘Maze’ were on their first ever Australian tour, so I have had the pleasure of watching them grow, change and distill everything they do. Right now, they are an extremely well oiled machine.

They are so smart about their choices in every aspect and they continue to blow me away with their music. They have mainstream appeal (which is extremely hard to do as a heavy band) and their is a buzz around them that only keeps growing. Be ready when their new album drops, they just invented a new genre!”

Helm

“Another Biased addition, but I don’t care because these guys are my unsung Aussie music heroes. A top notch back catalogue of some of the best undiscovered prog you’ll ever hear.

One of my favourite things about Helm, is the deeply Australian sound to their music. Much like Cog and Karnivool have, but in their own unique way. I hate patriotism but for some reason this band makes me proud to be from Australia.”

INXS

“To me, INXS are the style masters. I’ve danced in front of a mirror many times pretending to be Michael Hutchence. There’s something so sensual about their music. They have such a universal appeal and their sound has something that gives me visuals of the Australian outback.

Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farris are two of my songwriting hero’s. There’s also a dark element to Michael’s lyrics which entices me so much. He was an mystical artistic figure that didn’t need rational explanation.”

The Jezabels

“I have to be honest and say i didn’t enjoy their latest album ‘The Brink’ all that much. What did entice me is their first album ‘Prisoner’. I selfishly hope they return to a reincarnation of the sound from this record. Some of the songs hit me like a punch in the ‘feels’ on first listen.

The sound is so uniquely there’s, yet still retains an ‘Australiana’ vibe about it. I feel like this band could blow up like INXS did if they stick to non-conformity. Lead singer Hayley Mary is the modern reincarnation of ‘Divinyls’ singer Chrissy Amphlett. I hope they retain their unique approach to their music. They could become a beacon for Australian rock.”
