May is proving to be a strong month for Australian music in Australia, Vance Joy made ARIA history, and thankfully, an artist has had the most significant impact on Aussie charts this year.

Introducing a youngster by the name of Grace, the first Australian to reach the coveted #1 position on the ARIA Singles chart in 2015 with her RnB meet hiphop jam rework of the Lesley Gore song, ‘You Don’t Own Me’ featuring G-Eazy.

The beat has been in the top 50 of the Singles Chart for four weeks now, and and at long-last hit number one, edging out the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Swift and David Guetta to reach the top of the podium. Interestingly, the last homegrown act to achieve the gold medal status was The Veronicas back in September 2014 with ‘You Ruin Me’.

It’s rather funny that such a fresh faced artist hit #1 on the Singles Chart whilst there are many in Australia that don’t know who she is – the highest rating comment on the YouTube video for ‘You Don’t Own Me’ reading: “This song is…. very good! I’m never heard about Grace, but this singer is a good surprise!” Take a listen here:

Grace’s outstanding performance isn’t the great thing for Aussie music in May, with electronic duo Hermitude hitting #1 on the ARIA Album Chart for their record, Dark Night Sweet Light, which beat the highly anticipated Faith No More album, Sol Invictus.

Despite it taking nearly six months for an Australian to hit #1 on the Australian music charts, we’re sure there’s plenty more to come – don’t forget that Tame Impala have got their third record dropping in July of this year.
