They’re one of the most formidable bands in the country, but Birds of Tokyo almost met their match when they took the plunge into the cage of death with Crocosaurus Cove’s Kate and Will over the weekend.

The band were in Darwin to perform as part of the stacked Bass In The Grass 2015 lineup, which also included the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Flight Facilities, Illy, and Sheppard. The trip marked their first appearance since playing the same event in 2011.

As the NT News reports, the band had the chance to meet fellow Cove residents Wendell and Burt, who weigh in at 800kg and 700kg respectively, before taking the plunge. Guitarist Adam Spark remarked on how the snap of their jaws made for an impressive warm-up to Kate and Will.

“It’s a bit more intimidating than being up on stage,” he said. The band was in Darwin all last week, escaping the chilly weather gripping the rest of the country and conducting private rehearsals at beloved Darwin venue the Chippo.

“It’s been a great week, last time we were up here we just landed, played the show and flew out that night,” said Spark. “We were up until 1 or 2 in the morning just jamming with some locals.” It was a far cry from swimming with a couple of man-eating crocs.

“Towards the end there, he was either saying goodbye or hoping the cage was about to break,” said bassist Ian Berney, who conceded that there was definitely a ‘gulp’ moment or two when he noticed that Will was staring him dead in the eye.

“Feeding these crocs a couple of nerdy chickens,” the band joked on social media when sharing a photo of Adam and Ian getting some face-to-face time with one of the crocs. The band also shared a video of the band taking the plunge, which readers can check out below.
