The only thing we love as much as killer Aussie music is the people behind the scenes working hard behind the scenes helping build our incredible music scene. One of these very talented hardworking figures is Sydney based PR company Super Duper.

Created and spearheaded by Genna Alexopoulos, Super Duper was born in late 2013 and since has grown exponentially, now boasting one of the most impressive client rosters in Australian music including: The Sydney Opera House’s Death Cab For Cutie, and Ryan Adams performances, Red Bull Records, recently Cheap Mondays and a huge list of local and international talent.

Previously working at record label Shock and as part of Big Day Out’s marketing and PR department, Alexopoulos has an enviable knowledge of the the ins and outs of music publicity and the local music industry in general.

When we heard that Super Duper were looking for a talented new intern to join the team, we thought it could be a great opportunity to chat with Genna and get to know a little more about one of the most impressive and exciting independent PR companies in Aussie music.

The Birth Of Super Duper

“Super Duper found its feet in October 2013 – I was nearing 5 years as an in-house publicist, decided to give this whole ‘working for yourself’ thing a go and started Super Duper about a month later. It’s now 18 months in and I’ve found myself a right-hand-girl, Bianca Blancato, and together have set up a little office in Surry Hills.”

What Does Super Does

“At Super Duper we work with bands, brands, management and labels to help them send their work out to the world. We work alongside journalists, photographers, curators, stylists, copywriters and designers to plan and execute media strategies for album releases, national tours, pop-up stores and more.”

A Day In The Life Of A Publicist

“We start our day the same way a lot of others do – emails. Once we’ve prioritised and worked through them, we’re planning our releases, crafting editorial pitches for media, setting up interviews, researching leads that can help our clients and figuring them into each individual campaign strategy for the best possible results. And we read – a lot.

Having said that, every day is different. I know it’s a cliché but it’s about as close to the truth as you can get. Some days we’re in admin zone all day, other’s we’re at photo shoots with artists or in the car at 5:30am for breakfast show tapings. It’s what we love the most about what we do!”

The People Who Are Best Suited To This Type Of Work?

“People who are in-tune with their individual creativity (and aren’t afraid to use it).”

Clients And Highlights

“We work with a broad mix of people and companies, which keeps things very interesting! In the music world, some of our artists include Xavier Rudd, 360, The Story So Far, Taylor Henderson, Mark Tremonti, with an exciting project from a buzzing French band on the way.. We manage all Australian press for Red Bull Records, as well as shows for Ryan Adams and Death Cab For Cutie as part of Sydney Opera House’s Contemporary Music program.

Outside of music, we launched London street-wear label Lazy Oaf’s first ever Australian pop-up store in Paddington last year, that was a definite highlight. These days we are spending a lot of time in Surry Hills, with delicious NYC-inspired bagel house Brooklyn Hide on Commonwealth St, and Swedish cult-denim label Cheap Monday’s new pop-up store opening on Goulburn St.

Highlights? Where do we start?!”

Looking For An Intern

“We’re looking for someone that’s quick on their feet and has a hell-bent interest in the PR industry. A knack for crafty writing and an understanding of the digital landscape across traditional and social media are also big pluses. And must love people!

We think this is a great opportunity for the right person to gain valuable exposure to the PR world and to learn, develop and apply some of the key skills needed to grow and succeed in the industry in a workplace that supports creativity. It’s also a great chance to get an insight into a range of industry circles, be it music, fashion or communications.”

If you’re interested in applying for an internship at Super Duper send an email to Genna with a resume and cover letter.
