It seems that every time we write about a live music venue closing, another one pops up to replace it. We really are the lucky country here in Australia. Case in point, Melbourne, recently voted one of the world’s premier music cities, is being given yet another venue.

What’s more, this new live music space is taking over an old staple of the local nightlife scene and it even has star power to boot. As the Herald Sun reports, Collingwood favourite Dane Swan has bought into his first bar, dubbed The Albion Rooftop.

“I go into them enough, I may as well get involved in one,” Swan told the Herald Sun of his first venture into being a publican. The Albion Rooftop promises a rooftop bar (hence the name), a function space, and live entertainment.

“I’ve never been involved in something like this and the opportunity came up with the right people,” said Swan. “I’ve got a tattoo shop and a clothing shop. It’s good for life after footy – I’m a lot closer to the end.”

Swan and his partners, which includes Matt Darcy from the Darcy Group, Mark Armstrong, and former Melbourne Storm stars Robbie Kearns and Danny Williams, are currently renovating the site, which used to house Motel, a popular nightclub situated in South Melbourne.

They plan on opening the Albion Rooftop to the public on Friday, 21st August and promise plenty of entertainment, including live music. “It’s a regular hangout for when I’m allowed to hangout. It’s not just a one-trick pony, it will be a new and exciting venue,” said Swan.
