While it’s women who dominate the pop charts, festival bills are still dominated by male acts. Artists like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Katy Perry, who was recently revealed as the highest grossing musician of last year, are making bank, but nowhere to be found on a festival bill.

One could argue the reason is that music festival lineups hew towards the alternative rock and electronic genres, which is true. But what about all of the female and female-fronted rock bands?

Last year marked the first time that a female-fronted act had headlined Reading or Leeds festivals when Hayley Williams’ Paramore co-headlined a day of the popular UK event with Queens of the Stone Age.

Back in March, Tone Deaf wrote about several images that began making the rounds online, which showed what the lineups of various major music festivals would look like with all of the male acts removed. The result was bills that were near empty.

Clearly, there’s a serious problem going on, but the organisers of Burger a-Go-Go aren’t content to just sit around and deal with it. They’ve just announced the lineup for their sophomore event set to take place in Santa Ana, California and it’s absolutely sick.

All acts are female or female-fronted and topping the bill is a selection of living legends, like riot grrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna, who’ll be performing with her band The Julie Ruin; former Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon, who’ll perform as part of Glitterbust; and veteran singer-songwriter Cat Power.

They’ll be performing alongside younger garage acts such as Cherry Glazerr, Cults, Bleached, and Death Valley Girls, as well as some more recognisable names, such as The Moldy Peaches’ Kimya Dawson and UK singer-songwriter Kate Nash.

Frankly, it’s one of the best festival lineups we’ve seen all year, with plenty of great smaller bands to check out and a main card of bonafide legends. Without a doubt, Burger a-Go-Go 2 proves it’s not that hard to book a solid lineup of female acts.
