It’s just been an awesome year for Triple J’s Like A Version series. Quite frankly, we can’t wait until the network drop their annual Like A Version compilation album. We’ve written about our share of Like A Versions, and so far this year, every single one has had something we love about it.
From a staggering alt-rock mash-up and #1 Dads giving FKA twigs a serious run for her money, to Hiatus Kaiyote blowing us away, Oscar Key Sung’s ambitious Jamie xx rework, and Clowns giving us a raw as hell cover of an Aussie classic, we’ve been seriously impressed.
One of the things that’s had us absolutely awestruck is the ambition our local Aussie bands have been displaying in their cover choices. Case in point, Brisbane sons The Belligerents absolutely smashed through a cover of Fatboy Slim’s 1998 dance floor classic ‘Praise You’ this morning.
Being that the original song is a collection of samples thrown together by one of the UK’s premier electronic maestros, it’s no small feat to execute a quality cover of this timeless tune with live instruments. Everything from that unforgettable piano hook to those droning breakdowns has been taken care of. Well done, boys.
