Triple J’s Like A Version can sometimes be a hit and miss affair. Sometimes a band just picks a song too ambitious for their own good, sometimes the choice is too conventional and not ambitious enough, and sometimes they’re jet-lagged or hungover from playing a show the night before.

That said, this year’s Like A Version series has been on a serious roll. We’ve seen some rousing political statements, an incredible alt-rock mash-up, some ambitious takes on songs by the likes of FKA twigs, Jamie xx, and Fatboy Slim, as well as a raw take on an Australian classic.

Much like Oscar Key Sung, who took on Jamie xx’s lush and opulent single ‘Loud Places’ for his Like A Version instalment some weeks back, UK art rockers Everything Everything had their work cut out for them with their choice of ‘With Every Heartbeat’ by Scandinavian electro songstress Robyn.

The result is a stripped back version of the much-loved synthpop tune played by a stripped-back version of the band. The electronic bleeps and glitches are replaced by echoey though somewhat flat and repetitive guitar work, as frontman Jonathan Higgs hits the odd bum note or two on the vocals.

You’ve got to hand it to them, though. While it may not be one of the best Like A Version covers we’ve seen this year, it was certainly an ambitious choice for the band and the competition so far this year has been pretty stiff, especially from local bands like Dorsal Fins, who blew us away with their Like A Version.
