Having established themselves as local favourites in the Brisbane music scene, Moses Gunn Collective went on to gain national and international exposure with their Morning Shakes EP and the singles ‘Shalala’ and ‘Mary’.

The tracks scored heavy rotation on Triple J and community stations around Australia and earned the band critical acclaim throughout the international blog community. Now, the band will unveil their debut LP, Mercy Mountain, this Friday, 7th August.

The album is already being touted as an underground Aussie release to look out for and it’s sure to cement Moses Gunn Collective as one of Australia’s most promising young bands. To get under the skin of this unique new LP, we asked the band to take us through it track by track.

STRAWBERRY

Two parts to one very tasty berry. The first half was just a manic jam we made up out on mercy mountain while recording. We wanted to kick the album off with some high energy and super thick beauty spurts.

MERCY MOUNTAIN

What started as a soulful acoustic number got juiced up hard during one of our T.Rex fazes. It’s a real thumper and it’s sentiments of escape and salvation are key to the album so it became the title track.

HOLE IN THE WALL

As pretty as it is repetitive, we really wanted this one to drill it’s way into your head. A nice big fat juicy love hole right through your head. Written at the home studio and nearly discarded as ‘just another one for the pile’.

DESDAMONA

A tormented cry, we were really going for the anthem sing along here. We wrote this a while ago and got really obsessed with the demo for a while.

SHALALA

Wait… wait a second, wasn’t this on the last EP??!! Well fuck it this album’s going overseas and people seem to love this track so here it is.

NEW ROMANTIC NOVOCAINE

A band favourite, this was written days before we went out to record and just slipped onto the album. As with many of these tracks it was a case of Lewis mucking around with a great piece of instrumentation, Aidan hearing it and demanding to sing on it, the two of them finishing the song in an arvo.

MULLBERRY

Another delicious and truly Australian piece of fruit. We’ve been jamming on this little number for years and figured it was time to set her free.

HOT MESS

This was also a juiced up acoustic conversion and the most concise of all the tracks. We really had to stop ourselves from adding any big freak outs and extended bridges to keep this one punchy as hell.

BACK INTO THE WOMB

We got a little weird on the lyrical content on this one but it seems to fit with the album and the kids seem to love that weird shit hey. I guess we’re pretty weird so the fact it’s weird isn’t really that weird.

MIDNIGHT PARLOUR

This was another late arrival that only just made it onto the record. It’s really grown on us and goes off live. Gives us a chance to get really god damn sassy.

SLEEPWALKING

Lewis’ git-box masterpiece. I think he’s had this guitar run for a while so it’s nice that we can claim it. He showed Alex and Stagg their parts once or twice then the three of them nailed it live second or third take.

COLOUR TELEVISION

…will kill your brain. I think we wrote this while watching our favourite show “The Fantastic Tom Allen Colour TV Show.”

NEIHGHBOURHOOD

A slow burning finale. The only one of Aidan’s more relaxed numbers that avoided the usual Moses Gunn glammed up drug frenzy make over. Mostly. Bit of a sad note to end on but the sentiment is there.
