Former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning says fans can expect his next full-length solo effort, the follow-up to 2013’s warmly received Departures, some time next year, revealing that he’s mostly finished his third solo album.

Fanning recently stopped by the Double J studios to have a chat with host Myf Warhurst, discussing his upcoming performance with Katie Noonan, Tim Winton, and Jessica Watson as part of Rise For The Oceans next month.

“It’s the 50th anniversary celebration of the Australian Marine Conservation Society, so it’s basically just to celebrate that,” Fanning explained. “For something like that to have lasted 50 years and to be getting stronger is a great thing.”

“It’s not a concert as such. I’m playing a few songs, Katie Noonan’s also playing and we’re gonna collaborate on something. Tim Winton, who’s the patron of the ACMS, is going to be reading from an unpublished work of his.”

During the chat, Fanning also touched on his plans for a new solo album. The singer and songwriter unveiled his solo debut, the highly successful Tea & Sympathy, back in 2005, which yielded the mega-hit ‘Wish You Well’.

“I’ve been writing a record,” he told the station. “That’s mostly done. I think I might try and write a couple more songs and see if I can beat what I’ve got. I’ll record that in the next few months and it should be out next year, I suppose.”

In the meantime, fans can see Fanning making his hometown return as part of Rise For The Oceans, which takes place at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, 5th September.
