Melbourne’s psych-garage rockers Magic America have just dropped their brand new self-titled EP. A follow on to the band’s string of killer singles including ‘I Thought I Told You’ and ‘Monday Song’.

Taking their name from Blur’s track ‘Magic America’ the four mates draw influence from 60s psych and legendary guitar rockers like Brian Jonestown Massacre and Spaceman 3.

After forming in 2913, the band have cut their teeth playing alongside local rock n roll legends Drunk Mums, Stonefield, Lurch & Chief, and BONJA, so you know they’ve got the chops live. Check out their impressive EP below and for more info on the guys, visit their Facebook page.

COMES AND GOES

This track is about boredom, loneliness and being in your twenties and stuck in a rut. “Seem to waste a million days” sums up the feeling of sleeping in till 3pm and skipping uni to play video games. It works well as an opener and kind of sets the tone for the EP.

SHOCK ME SOBER

Shock Me Sober’s probably the poppiest tune on the EP. It’s about being drunk and being “that bloke” at a party. The line “you can’t shock me sober” is about your friends telling you to behave; usually to no avail. Dave Turner did a great job with the drums and bass to this track.

I’M NOT DYING

This one’s about not being with someone anymore and how you try and tell yourself you’re over it. But, even the fact that you’re saying you’re over it, means that you’re clearly not. The static guitar at the beginning was a funny accident that we decided to keep in the song.

I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU

‘I Thought I Told You’ was the first song I wrote for the EP. It’s probably the most complete song I think we’ve ever written. We really went to town on the pedals and textures on this one and it is still one of our favourites to play live. It has a swirling quality to it which seems to really grab the audiences at our shows.

HOLLY

The EP was meant to only be a 4 track EP, however we had a few hours of studio time left after everything was complete so grabbed whatever guitars were around at the time and played without thinking too much. We ended up writing and recording this song in a few hours. I think the energy of it being new and fun is captured and is what makes this song. It’s pretty different from the rest of the EP, but is a great snapshot of the mood that day.
