Local duo Tijuana Cartel have an undeniable knack for blending layers of rich, intricate atmospheric soundscapes and freaked out psych rhythms, so it’s no surprise that their upcoming album Psychedelicatessen (out Spet 4th) is a bonafide gem.
This album has a very unique influence. Inspired by a ’78 Double J broadcast, which detailed “a psychedelic road trip from Brisbane to Sydney”, Psychedelicatessen is the band’s ode to the play and its author, Russell Guy.
The duo have knack for creating for Middle Eastern scales, beats that get a floor moving and while maintaining a general psychedelic approach in song structure and ethos. Not married to one genre or another, they happily change direction in search of new flavours and inspiration whenever the moment takes them there and Psychedelicatessen is the epitome of that.
