With the full Melbourne Music Week 2015 program set to drop on Wednesday, 7th October, organisers have now announced this year’s spectacular flagship venue will be the disused basement and adjoining rooms of the former Royal Women’s Hospital on Swanston Street.

This slice of uniquely Melbourne history will serve as the venue for a series of cutting-edge installations and programming, 150 years after the building first opened. MMW organisers will transform the site into the event’s first carbon neutral flagship venue.

“From Kubik, to Where?House at the Argus Building; The Residence dome in Birrurung Marr and MMW at QVM last year, the city really does become the stage for Melbourne Music Week,” said MMW Chair of Marketing Councillor Beverley Pinder-Mortimer.

Punters who became lost in Swell last year will once again get to experience this fully immersive live music experience. They’ve been commissioned to reinvent 12 of the Former Royal Women’s Hospital’s forgotten rooms, with secret one-off performances blending music and art.

MMW’s Opening Night at the Former Royal Women’s Hospital will take place Friday, 13th November and is set to breathe fresh life into the building, with an all-Melbourne lineup featuring the likes of Gypsy & The Cat, The Harpoons, and Dorsal Fins.

“We are committed to ensuring local musicians are a key part of Melbourne Music Week and our all- Melbourne opening night is sure to complement the transformation of this impressive space,” said Councillor Rohan Leppert, Chair of Arts Melbourne.

Earlier this month, organisers gave us a sneak peek at what the rest of the program has in store by announcing two major international names: psychedelic rock veterans The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Berlin sound-art hero Robert Henke of Monolake fame.

In a statement, organisers said they chose these two unique acts because they hail from “two cities with world class music reputations akin to Melbourne’s own” — San Francisco and Berlin, respectively — and represent “opposite ends of the music spectrum”.

Anton Newceombe-led project The Brian Jonestown Massacre will perform at Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday, 15th November, while Henke will be bringing his stunning Lumière show to the Melbourne Recital Centre on Thursday, 19th November.
