Besides cat videos, if there’s one thing YouTube is known for, it’s covers. The video streaming giant is awash with hobby musicians performing covers of popular tunes, some novel and creative, some faithful to the original, others plain awful.

But rarely do the covers actually get the nod of recognition from the original artist themselves. Kevin Parker, however, apparently has a lot of time on his hands when he’s not selling out shows or recording critically acclaimed albums.

“This is awesome,” is how this 8-bit cover of ‘Alter Ego’, a cut from Tame Impala’s first album, Innerspeaker, was described on the band’s official Facebook page, where it’s accrued more than 19,000 likes over five hours at the time of writing and countless nods of approval from fans.

The cover comes courtesy of Nonak, a Spanish musician who describes himself as “a spiritually-raised-in-the-sixties dude who plays keyboards” on his SoundCloud page, where he’s uploaded 8-bit covers of several Tame Impala tunes.

In addition to straight covers, as well as numerous original compositions, Nonak has performed 8-bit renditions of ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards‘, ‘Elephant‘, and ‘Apocalypse Dreams‘, all cuts from Tame Impala’s 2012 album, Lonerism.
