Case in point is heavy metal, which is best known for its growling, distortion-drenched guitars. Distortion is what puts the heavy in heavy metal and without it… well, what does heavy metal sound like without distortion?

Turns out, it sounds a lot like surf rock. Just check out this little viral video hit courtesy of YouTube user VAALVLA, who decided to play through a selection of iconic heavy metal riffs with his distortion pedal switched off.
