As we covered this morning in our Guide To Guitar Pedals & The Musicians That Use Them, without certain guitar pedals, whole careers and even whole genres very likely wouldn’t exist. In many ways, it’s the effects that define them.
Case in point is heavy metal, which is best known for its growling, distortion-drenched guitars. Distortion is what puts the heavy in heavy metal and without it… well, what does heavy metal sound like without distortion?
Turns out, it sounds a lot like surf rock. Just check out this little viral video hit courtesy of YouTube user VAALVLA, who decided to play through a selection of iconic heavy metal riffs with his distortion pedal switched off.
