There’ve been whispers for months now that online video giant YouTube was planning on unveiling its very own premium music streaming service. They even opened it up to trials, picking select users who got to preview what was dubbed Music Key.

However, it now appears the company’s plans have changed. As TechCrunch reports, Google is rolling Play Music into a new $9.99 subscription for ad-free viewing across the entire YouTube network, set to launch in the US later this month.

The new service replaces Google Music Key and gives users a simple way to instantly watch or listen to YouTube video and Play Music content on-demand and without ads. The new service will be integrated as a tier on existing YouTube and Google accounts.

Music fans are catered to with a new YouTube Music app dedicated to music-related video streaming arriving sometimes soon. It will be free with ads or ad-free if you sign up for the site’s new premium subscription service.

Oh yeah, and the premium subscription service has a name that sounds a lot like a famous porn site. No, really. Did we forget to mention that? Oh yeah, YouTube’s new premium streaming service is called YouTube Red.

Yes, we know it sounds a lot like RedTube. No, you’re not the only one thinking that. The rest of the internet has noticed the similarity and they’re certainly letting everyone know about it across all of social media.

As Business Insider reports, top internet analyst Mark Mahaney titled a note to investors about YouTube’s new service with a tongue-in-cheek stab at the unfortunate name, “YouTube Red (No, Not Red Tube).”

The comparisons have even prompted YouTube to respond. As The Wrap reports, during a Q&A session with reporters at YouTube Space Los Angeles, YouTube’s chief business officer said the company wasn’t concerned about the association.

“We did a lot of consumer testing, so we were comfortable with it,” said Robert Kyncl. In fact, contrary to what you might think, the company are very proud of their association with the colour red, even if it does make their new service easily confusable with a porn site.

“A we talked to fans, as we talked to users, as we did our studies, the term ‘red’ was very associated with YouTube. It’s sort of core to what is the YouTube brand,” Matthew Glotzbach, vice president and product manager for YouTube, said.

“It has a lot of meaning in terms of love, it has a lot of meaning in terms of premium exprerience — the red carpet, the red velvet rope. So we felt like it was a really good match. We’re not too worried about that other site.”
