Easily the most shiftless band in Australia, Melbourne psychedelic collective King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have finally confirmed they have begun work on their eighth album, a full two months after announcing their seventh.
The band confirmed the release of the all-acoustic Paper Mâche Dream Balloon back in August, with a release date set for next month. But speaking to triple j at the recent AIR Awards, band members confirmed they’re already looking to album number eight.
Eric Moore, Joe Walker, and Lucas Skinner said the band’s Paper Mâche Dream Balloon follow-up will basically be the antithesis of that album, drawing influence from the heavy sounds of ’80s heavy metal masters.
“Our next record sounds like Motörhead,” the guys told triple j. “It’s way heavier, kind of like early 80s heavy thrash metal, like heavier than Metallica, a lot heavier than Slayer. It’s unlistenable, essentially.”
As we reported this morning, the seven-piece managed to pick up the AIR Independent Music Award for Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album, which they received for last year’s highly acclaimed I’m In Your Mind Fuzz.
“It was really weird because this album came out this time last year and then Quarters! came out in May so it feels like Mind Fuzz been out for ages, but it’s still nice to get recognised,” the boys said of the win.
“[We felt] very surprised and shocked, Eric was very unprepared. It was actually one of the worst speeches in history I think.” We can apparently expect the eighth King Gizzard album some time early next year, with album number seven out Friday, 13th November.
Since unveiling their debut album, 12 Bar Bruise, back in 2012, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have released five full-length studio albums, which averages out to a shockingly lazy two albums per year. Fans can likely expect news of their ninth album, oh, sometime next week.
