One of this country’s most loved bands Philadelphia Grand Jury got fans all excited with the news that they’d reunited by dropping a new (unexpected) single, which was quickly followed by the announcement that yes there would be a long awaited second album on its way accompanied by a tour.

The LP titled Summer Of Doom dropped October 2nd and was a worthy follow up to their 2009 debut album Hope Is For Hopers.

To celebrate the release and the album tour (which they’re currently on the road for) the guys decided to interview each other about breaking up, the new LP and why they got back together. Check the video below and a further chat with Joel AKA MC Bad Genius below.

How They Would Explain The New Record To Their Grandmothers

“Both my grandmothers have passed away, but they would’ve hated it and told me that it was monstrously noisy so my description would’ve fallen on deaf ears. It’s hard enough trying to describe it to my mum. I normally just sigh out of frustration and say “it’s rock’n’roll”, which really, is probably what I should have said to start with.”

What The Guys Have Been Up To

“Berkfinger went to Germany, built an insanely awesome studio, got married, hung out with Peaches (he’s a horrible name-dropper), released a solo album as Feelings and learnt enough German to not embarrass himself when ordering food at restaurants. I’ve been working with asylum seekers for the last few years and despairing about the state of Australian politics, while very occasionally busting out a remix for different friends. And who knows what Dan’s been up to. The guy is a complete enigma to me.”

How Aussie Music Has Changed Since Hiatus

“Almost all the bands we used to tour with have broken up and now there’s all these young bands popping up, making us feel like we’re old and out of touch. But Brisbane still has the Brisbane sound and Melbourne bands still sound like they’re from Melbourne, so it’s not really that different. I guess people are buying CDs even less than they were 5 years ago, so the idea of an album release has a lot less gravitas than it once did. I don’t really care though. The future is EXCITING.”

What They’d Change About The Break Up

“I would’ve made sure we kept an accountant to help us out, because the burden of having years of incomplete tax returns is slowly but surely taking its toll. Oh, and I would choose for us to have not broken up in the first place, of course.”

What Song Would Soundtrack The Break Up

1. Dan W Sweat: Huey “Piano” Smith and The Clowns’ ‘Don’t You Just Know It’
2. MC Bad Genius:
Beck’s ‘Paper Tiger’
3. Berkfinger:
Iggy Pop ‘I’m Bored’

What’s Next Post-Tour?

“We’ve actually got a little space setup at the moment in Marrickville that’s a half-finished building site where we can make as much noise as we like at any time of the day or the night. So after the tour is over (and probably on the days in between shows), we’re going to be recording album #3. There’s also plans afoot for our NEXT tour some time in early 2016 and although I can’t give out any details at the moment, it’s going to be VERY different and VERY special.”
