Popular Melbourne watering hole and live music space The Pinnacle Hotel suffered extensive damage after it was engulfed in flames on Saturday morning, halting traffic and trams on St Georges Rd.

As Broadsheet reports, almost 30 firefighters and seven trucks were called to the scene of a large blaze at around 9.30am Saturday morning. The MFB described the operation as an “aggressive attack”.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a clothes dryer and reportedly caused between $150 – $200,000 worth of damage, according to the MFB. Fire crews managed to confine damage to the ground floor.

Despite the considerable damage, venue owners seem to be in positive spirits, taking to Facebook to inform punters of the incident and promising that they would be back “bigger and better” soon.

“As you may have seen we’ve had ourselves a bit of a mischief,” they wrote in the post. “Everyone is ok, and we’ll be back bigger and better soon. We’ll keep you posted on re-opening. See you soon friends.”

Speaking to Fairfax, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said the fire was brought under control just after 10am. “The fire is not spreading any further,” he said. “Crews will probably be there all day to make sure it doesn’t flare up again.”

The spokesman said fire crews received a call at 9.31am on Saturday morning. “We have got a fire in the rear yard and it also involves part of the structure,” he said. “We have got seven trucks on the scene with about 24 firefighters.”

“We have issued a community warning for a radius of 500m radius to close their windows and doors and it is affecting tram services.” Luckily, there were no reports of injury.
