While the term ‘DJ’ has been sullied in recent years thanks to an army of glorified jukeboxes doing little more than pressing play, it used to be a respectable profession and even considered an art form.

The truth is that, in some circles, it still is. There are real DJs out there whose skill behind two turntables and a mixer is so immense and impressive that they make the aforementioned equipment a real instrument.

Sound like something you might want to check out? Red Bull have you covered. They’re putting on a free showcase featuring some of the standout performers from their recent Red Bull Thre3style competition.

Red Bull Thre3style pits the world’s best DJs against each other in a competition that ranks them according to technical skill and their ability to thrill a dance floor, before a final winner is crowned.

Performers are given just 30 minutes each to prove that they’re the best in the room and judges work to strict criteria that also marks DJs on their originality in song choices, confidence performing, and mixing prowess.

The Red Bull Thre3style showcase will be taking over Melbourne’s 170 Russell on Wednesday, 18th November, with a lineup featuring Australian Thre3style champion DJ Perplex, Victorian champion Flagrant, and a host of other DJs.

“Thre3style is by far the most contemporary and very appropriate and relevant [competition] to modern DJing,” DJ Perplex recently told Red Bull. “It’s exactly what we need right now. I love the #realDjing hashtag.”

“It’s a wild ride and you’re in for a real treat! I really recommend people get on down if they can. It is so rare that you get to see so many great DJs at once demonstrating their technical skills in a club format these days, it’s really not to be missed.”
