Triple J Unearthed is arguably the biggest backbone to Australia’s independent music scene, with a mission statement of uncovering the expansive hidden talent within Australia, and allowing some of best lesser-known acts to gain more exposure through the likes of radio play and support slots for festivals.

Commencing in 1995 throughout rural Australia as well as each major city, it set to find out who’s who across 41 regions, stretching across from the likes of Mount Gambier to Alice Springs as well as the likes of Newcastle and Gippsland. It’s through this where some Aussie favourites began to find their feet as they were pushed into the limelight.

Come 2006 with the advancement of technology and the internet, the format shifted to an online presence, wherein bands were required to upload an mp3 of their songs online, as well as publish a photo of the band as well as an artist bio. This format stuck and has since gone on to strengthen through the following years, with some of Australia’s biggest acts being discovered via Unearthed.

Having always been large supporters of Australia’s independent music scene we decided take a look at some of Triple J Unearthed’s past success stories and find out where they are now, and what their newfound exposure lead them to.
