Believe it or not, it’s actually been a pretty exciting year for Australia’s live music scene. Certainly, we still have many problems to contend with, but it seems as though there’s more venues opening than ever.

Just yesterday, Tone Deaf reported on the launch of a new Perth venue that’s opening inside of a chocolate factory and the past month has seen a number of new venues open, including The Fat Controller in Adelaide and Blue Basement in Melbourne.

However, we now have to report the sad news that Australia is about to lose one of its favourite live music spots. According to the owners of Adelaide’s Fowler’s Live, the venue will be closing its doors in May 2017.

“Some of you may of heard the news last night at the [South Australian Music] Awards, some may of heard it on the radio this morning,” owners write in a statement posted to the official Fowler’s Live Facebook page.

“Fowler’s Live WILL be staying open until May 2017. For the next 18 months, let’s get as many gigs booked in as possible and get as many people through the doors as we can. If there is any time to start showing your support for live music it’s now.”

Before signing off, the owners appeal to fans: “Pre-purchase tickets, come along to gigs, promote your shows and your mates’ shows, encourage the young people of today to get behind live music like the old days. Keep Live Music Alive.”

The announcement follows reports last year that the venue would in fact cease operations in 2015, but the news officially broke during last week’s South Australian Music Awards via Robert Dunstan, who won the Fowler’s Live Achievement Award.

The 500-capacity venue, located in Adelaide’s West End precinct, regularly hosts an eclectic mix of local and international bands and artists. Upcoming gigs at Fowler’s Live include The Getaway Plan, Unwritten Law, The Superjesus, Dream On Dreamer, and more.
