Foo Fighters fans have spent the past few weeks racking their brains about what a mysterious timer that appeared on the band’s official website could possibly be leading to. Well, they no longer have to wonder.

As Consequence of Sound reports, Dave Grohl and his band of merry men have just surprise released a free EP of entirely new material. The Saint Cecilia EP features five tracks and is dedicated to the victims of the Paris attacks.

In an open letter accompanying the release, frontman Grohl explained that the EP had “taken on an entirely different tone” following the attacks, which saw Foo Fighters cancelling the remainder of their latest European tour.

According to iTunes, “this five-song EP captures nearly forgotten moments from the band’s 20-year odyssey—a brilliant patchwork of pieced-together riffs and song fragments that were tracked in an impromptu studio at Austin’s Hotel Saint Cecilia.”

“The road-tested band blasts through the set of scrappy guitar-driven rockers with high-volume fury. Polished? No way. But the rowdy performances and rough edges make Saint Cecilia pack a visceral punch.”

Meanwhile, in the letter Grohl recounts how he rolled into Austin, Texas’ Saint Cecilia hotel earlier this year and “was struck with a rather impulsive idea. To record some songs on our days off to give to world as a ‘thank you’ for the last two years.”

The EP is now available to stream and download via Apple Music and iTunes.
