For those uninitiated, Plum is the dreamy electro bedroom recording project of local talent Caleb Jacobs. Usually known for his catchy, melodic guitar work in Sydney outfit The Cathys, this solo project Plum sees Caleb tap deeper into his pop influences to create a unique take on heady electronic pop.

A follow on from ‘Pavement’ his debut single release last year, Plum has now dropped an impressive four track EP (which features the single).  The EP is a stunning alt-pop gem awash with woozy guitars, progressive beats and carefully crafted songwriting.

Having already captured some attention for his efforts including being contacted by Virginia-based label Citrus City Records  to be part of their inaugural mixtape, he’s now celebrating the release of the EP by kindly penning a track by track which you can check out below. If you like what you’re hearing be sure to pop by Plum’s Facebook page for more info on upcoming shows and releases.

TinyFeet

This was the first track I wrote for the EP. Writing and recording have always been one and the same for me, the whole process happens at once. When I started working on TinyFeet, I hadn’t really figured out what Plum sounded like. The process of writing this song really laid down the foundations for the texture of the EP.

Lyrically it’s about trying not to stand in the way of a connection, about how much two people are willing to sacrifice at the start of a relationship, and whether ones independence is ultimately more important.

Pavement

Pavement is kinda like a meditation on what it means to be lost. More often than not, ‘being lost’ has a negative connotation. It plays with the idea of choosing to be lost, and fully surrendering to it.

I wanted to write something that felt mindless, so I found a couple of chords that sat well together and just strummed em over and over. It’s also a farewell to my childhood dog/best friend – Hendrix.

Reveal

I’m a notoriously shitty sleeper. I’ve spent lots of sleepless nights lying next to people wondering what they’re dreaming about. I’m also obsessed with dreams.

I guess this tune ended up being about searching for some profound meaning in a dream, not necessarily finding it, but still having an awesome time flying or swimming with sharks.

Giv.

Giv’s just a straight up love song. About shutting everything out and sleeping through the Winter. It’s about a relationship being far more absorbing than what the world outside has to offer.

I also wanted to see how far I could push a super simple chord progression, and develop movement with texture instead.
