As some readers will remember, early last year we reported on the debut of a new Australian music festival taking place in the suburb of Queanbeyan in New South Wales. The new event was billed as a family-friendly gathering for the local community.

Why then did it catch our eye? Because it just so happened to be called Googfest. Yes, staged in the suburb of Googong, the inaugural Googfest was headlined by X-Factor winner Dami Im alongside Lavers, Mary Ann ver Der Horst and Big Boss Groove.

After we instantly declared it Australia’s most hilariously named music festival, we took a peek at the website, which encouraged punters to “Speak Googonian” and participate in Googong’s favourite pastime – BBQing. That’s right, you could cook it at Googfest.

Well, it appears that the inaugural Googfest was a resounding success, because the Googong township have announced they’re bringing it back for round two next month and they’ve even managed to recruit Canberra stars SAFIA for the lineup.

If you still haven’t quite caught on to what’s so funny about naming a family-friendly music festival Googfest, it’s that “googs” is a common colloquialism for ecstasy. We’re serious, if you don’t believe us just ask Urban Dictionary.

In addition to SAFIA, this year’s Googfest will also feature sets by Amber Nichols, the Burley Griffin, Guyy & the Fox, and the Kaleid Trio, and a fireworks finale will cap off what organisers promise will be “a live music event of Googonian proportions”.

If you’re in the area and want to see what Googfest is all about, shuttle buses will run from Queanbeyan, Woden, and Tuggeranong, taking you to the festival site. Entry is free and you can find more info over on the official Googong website.
